It is back to school season!
For some this time of the year is filled with excitement — new friends, new clothes, new school supplies, and new adventures awaiting. These resilient kids face the transition and newness with excitement and look forward to the memories ahead. For others, this is a time of dread — a new school, trying to make new friends, feeling like the odd kid on the block, itchy uniforms, clear backpacks, and long walks to school. These kids are also resilient but the weight of the newness is overwhelming. They will adjust but for a parent’s heart to see her child’s stress, it can be gut-wrenching.
Moms and dads sending their excited kiddos off may be fighting other feelings — stress, sadness, anxiety. Their child is excited but they know this is their last baby to leave the nest and enter the world of school aged kids which is a huge step. Many moms and dads are joining the kid-free days club and celebrating with a big mimosa and date day! Whatever you are feeling, we can promise there are others in the same boat even if the Facebook facade says differently.
Know that you will get through this. Rely on a good friend or friends and stay busy. Learn to enjoy these moments because they go so quickly and your new routine will begin in no time. Before you know it, you will be watching that Kindergartener walk across the stage at her high school graduation.
How are you feeling as your children transition back to school?
