I see it asked all of the time on the spouses group here “Where is the best place to take children to get a haircut?” When you PCS, finding people you are comfortable with performing services is hard. New doctors, new hair stylists, new babysitters. All of it. Luckily we are in the age of spouses groups on social media where we can ask for people to give opinions of the places to go to and places to stay far away from!
I read these threads over and over, posted at least weekly. The one place that stood out to me for hair cutting for children was Sharkey’s Cuts For Kids in Lorton Virginia. I knew that it was time for me to go and form my own opinion. Was this place as cool as these parents made it out to be?
Why is Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids so popular?
YES! Yes it was! Walking in with my 4 year old (who has never had a haircut before), I was nervous. We were greeted with “Hello Princess – Are you ready to get your hair done for the royal ball?” and off to the wash basin she went! She had a smile on her face the whole time!
The stylist then took her back to the front where she got to choose which car she wanted to sit in while her hair was cut and styled. She had the choice of a police car, fire truck, Lightening McQueen and a Frozen Jeep that sang “Let it go!” very loudly. Of course, she chose the Frozen Jeep.
The hair was cut quickly while the stylist continuously directed her in kind ways, “Look down Princess!” Then she styled her hair with two braids, a butterfly clip and even blow dried my daughter’s hair with a diffuser.
Next up, she even got a mini-manicure. Little girls are taken back to the manicure station to have their nails painted as part of their pampering package. Then the nails were blow dried so we could be on our way. But not before stopping to grab a balloon and a lollipop!
With care and services like this, it has to come with a large price tag right? Yes the price is higher than a regular chain that cuts children’s hair too, but the value is totally there! The specialized care for Piper was $25 for all of her services! I think the experience is valuable enough because instead of crying for the first haircut like many children do, she left there feeling like it was a girl’s day out!
