Stroller Warriors — A Community with a Running Problem!
Stroller Warriors. Have you seen them running on base before? Read more to learn more about this amazing community of Mother Runners!
After four deliveries, my biggest concern was getting back to my prior self very quickly. I grew a tiny baby human in my body (FOUR times!) I gave myself to those pregnancies. When I was sick for 3 out of 4 of the pregnancies basically from conception to delivery, I ate what the baby allowed me to eat. That was usually potatoes. I ate potatoes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Baked potatoes, hash browns, scalloped potatoes, French fries, basically it was my comfort food for my not so comfortable belly.
This carb loading for the marathon of birth probably did not help me feel good about myself postpartum. I had a lot of work to do to get back to that former self. My first pregnancy, I bounced back easily (I didn’t have round the clock sickness with that one either). Second pregnancy, my husband worked long hours and had more than an hour commute. He was a miserable child with (at the time) undiagnosed severe dairy allergies. I couldn’t even get a shower most days so the thought of working out wasn’t happening. Food was whatever I could fix and eat one-handed while holding a screaming dictator on my hip.
With baby three–something magical happened. I was in a duty station where they had a Stroller Warriors Chapter. Stroller Warriors helped me to lose 55 lbs in a year. Stroller Warriors is a FREE running club that is military spouse founded, operated and focused. You bring your stroller with your little ones to the work out. It’s really a community – a community with a running problem, but a community nonetheless.
There are chapters all over the world. So even if you are reading this near a military installation that is not in Northern Virginia, chances are, you are close to a chapter. That means you Virginia Beach, Yorktown, VA, Fort Riley, KS and New Orleans. Even if you hate running (I said I would never run and I have done several 10 mile races and a half marathon), these ladies will help you find a way to love it and they will solve the world’s problems one mile at a time. They also have strength workouts, some chapters have yoga. You just have to go to one meeting because seeing is believing!
I cannot even begin to tell you how this group of women (and sometimes the occasional military husband) transformed my life. If I had a question, they had an answer. If there was a problem, they found a solution. If I needed to be upset, they told me “It is okay to be upset, but really, you should run that anger out!” Without having family close by, they became my family.
